DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, Sidereal, "A.W.W.Co. Waltham, Mass" marked mvt, 19J, Model 1892, 18S, coin silver OF A.W.C.Co. swingout case engraved "Dom. Obs. 251" to its rear, white enamel 24 hour dial marked "Sidereal" above seconds-register, SW-LS, diamond endstone, jeweled barrel, checkerboard center pattern nickel damascene, s#18028584. A good example of this rare watch, in total Waltham produced 300 examples of this 19 jewel Model 1892 movement that were adjusted to sidereal timing, equipped with motion works for one hour hand revolution per day, and paired with flat enamel dials with either "Sidereal" or "Astronomical" marking above their seconds-register. The Dominion Observatory of Canada is known to have used Waltham Sidereal watches for timekeeping measurements as found among several primary sources that return with an online search.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, fine scratch between train bridge case screw and adjacent train bridge screw, few minimal micro-fine scratches elsewhere; excellent dial with very short scratch removing lower portion of "L" in "Sidereal" marking, very small fine scratch within upper portion of seconds-register; excellent hands, small tool marks to hub of minute; case bezel with consistent fit and tone to body of case but bezel with hand-scratched internal Roman numerals of 4445 which do not correspond with s#441428 within case rear, case shows light to medium wear, fine scratches and abrasions to rear, shallow dent to left side of body as viewed from front, very slight minimal shallow dent toward lower-right of rear evident as small ripple of reflection, good marking detail to rear, inner nickel-plated swing ring of case with filing marks through to underlying base metal to its reverse ledge where movement seats and with one small semi-circular mark evident which may be a witness mark from another movement's case screw; tight bow, crown shows little wear, when crown is lifted to up position the reeded band below crown slides up and down freely on the pendant and the case stem has some tendency to hang up a bit on movement swing ring; good thick glass crystal with only a very small edge flake at upper-right and some finish imperfections at left perimeter.
